Vintage and Used Buyer
Job Summary
The Vintage & Used Inventory Buyer plays a key role in sourcing, evaluating, purchasing, and managing vintage and used inventory for Chicago Music Exchange. This position works directly with customers both in-store and online to acquire inventory, support authentication efforts, and help maintain a dynamic and inspiring selection of vintage gear. Through strategic buying, strong relationship building, and thoughtful inventory management, this role contributes directly to revenue growth and the overall customer experience.
This is a store-facing role that operates in the middle of the energy and excitement of our showroom. Success in this position requires a positive attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to work well with a wide variety of people. The ideal candidate also is proficient with computers and technology and brings a foundational understanding of guitars, vintage instruments, and music gear along with a genuine eagerness to continue learning.
Responsibilities:
- Proactively purchase vintage and used inventory
- Engage with customers on in-store buys and trades in a professional, knowledgeable, and friendly manner.
- Monitor inboxes and purchase inventory from online customers
- Execute daily administrative tasks to keep vintage inventory operations organized and efficient
- Manage and maintain the organization of vintage inventory, ensuring accurate records and optimal storage
- Participate in the authentication process of vintage guitars, working alongside the Vintage Manager to verify accuracy
- Lead and support productivity-enhancing projects that improve workflow, organization, and department operations.
- Conduct research to expand the company’s knowledge base on vintage instruments, market trends, and historical context
- Contribute to revenue-driving initiatives through strategic inventory management, product evaluation, and customer service
- Ability to work quickly and accurately in the hustle and bustle of a busy store
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills (both in person and digitally)
- Proficient with computers and ability to learn new technologies and platforms
- Strong research, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Foundational knowledge of music gear (specifically guitars)
- Familiarity with the basics of sales and accounting: Reporting, COGS, Margins, etc.
- Previous experience in a retail environment is a plus!
Benefits and Other Information
- Full time, 40 hours a week based out of our store near the Paulina Brown Line stop
- Salary Range: $45k to $50k USD
- Exact schedule TBD but will require weekends
